NVIDIA Invests £500 Million in AI Hyperscaler Nscale

NVIDIA, the American technology company known for its graphics processing units (GPUs), has announced a significant investment in UK-based cloud computing firm, Nscale. The investment, totalling £500 million, is part of a wider push to accelerate the "AI industrial revolution" in the UK.

The announcement, made by Jensen Huang, co-founder and CEO of NVIDIA, was shared on LinkedIn along with a video featuring Huang and Nscale CEO, Josh Payne. According to NVIDIA's projections, Nscale could generate as much as £50 billion in revenue over the next six years.

Nscale specialises in building tech platforms and energy-efficient AI-focused data centres. The investment will see NVIDIA deploy 120,000 of its new Blackwell Ultra GPUs in UK data centres by 2026, marking the largest rollout of its kind.

The collaboration between NVIDIA and Nscale forms part of a larger initiative that includes partnerships with OpenAI (Stargate UK project), Microsoft, CoreWeave, and Oxford Quantum Circuits. The aim is to build the next generation AI infrastructure in the UK, with plans to create AI factories capable of serving advanced models by the end of 2026.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer hailed the investment as a step towards making the UK a world leader in AI. He stated that the UK wants to be the destination of choice for companies at the forefront of technological change, driving economic growth, creating more jobs, and transforming public services as part of the Plan for Change.

As part of the investment, NVIDIA will also support Nscale's global expansion with 300,000 Grace Blackwell GPUs worldwide. Nscale plans to onboard 100 AI specialists in its Mayfair location after the next year.

It's worth noting that a startup launched by Google DeepMind researchers has recently raised funds, but this is not directly related to the NVIDIA investment in Nscale. However, the investment underscores the growing importance of AI in the UK, with up to £11 billion set to be invested in local data centres as part of the collaborations.

Jensen Huang, in a gesture of goodwill, gifted Josh Payne a signed bottle of Johnnie Walker whisky. Huang also stated that the UK is going to be an AI superpower.

Sir Keir Starmer's plans aim to position the UK as an AI leader, with Nscale being described as an 'AI hyperscaler'. The investment in Nscale is a testament to the UK's commitment to embracing and driving technological advancements in the AI sector.
