NPS Unveils Plan to Boost Mobile Service on National Mall
The National Park Service (NPS) has unveiled a draft plan to significantly boost mobile phone service on the National Mall. The study, open for public comment until Nov. 6, aims to enhance capacity by up to 400 percent, potentially including 5G access. The agency seeks to balance improved connectivity with preserving the park's historic character.
The draft study, titled the National Mall Telecommunications Infrastructure Plan, acknowledges that large crowds and events often overwhelm mobile networks on the mall. This not only impacts tourists but also federal employees working there. The plan aims to address these challenges while protecting the park's views and historic resources. The task force behind the plan, led by the Department of Homeland Security and partnered with NPS, has outlined objectives for the upgrade.
The public is invited to review and comment on the draft plan until Nov. 6. The NPS aims to improve mobile service on the National Mall without compromising its historic character and resources.
