In 2010, Samsung made a bold move to enter the burgeoning tablet market with the launch of its Galaxy Tab. The tech giant aimed to sell an impressive 10 million units in its first year, with a million units expected to be sold by the end of 2010 [1][4]. This aggressive strategy was a response to Apple's successful launch of the iPad earlier that year.
Samsung also planned to expand its tablet portfolio by offering a variety of models with different screen sizes and features, including tablets that could potentially run both Android and Windows operating systems [1][4]. This diversification was intended to capture diverse market segments and boost overall sales.
The Galaxy Tab, which runs on Android 2.2, is now available in more countries. In South Korea, SK Telecom holds exclusive rights to sell it, but launch dates have not been announced. In Canada, Bell Canada started selling the Galaxy Tab from November 12 for CAD 649.95, with HSPA+ (4G-like) wireless connectivity in addition to Wi-Fi [2]. Canadians can also purchase the Galaxy Tab from Bell Canada, but pricing and availability details from Rogers Wireless are yet to be disclosed.
In Bahrain, Viva is offering the Galaxy Tab with a free 3GB data bundle for a year and a free three-month subscription, but pre-order details are not yet available [3]. The Galaxy Tab, which is smaller than the iPad, costs comparably. The 7 inch display and NAND Flash memory are the most expensive components in the Galaxy Tab, with the cost of components approximately $205.22 [5].
As Samsung continues to expand its tablet offerings, it solidifies its position as a major player in the tablet market. With its aggressive approach and innovative products, Samsung is poised to challenge Apple's dominance and offer consumers a compelling alternative in the world of tablets.
