Newcomer Keen marks its entry into trail running discourse, unveiling the Seek - a look at the trailblazing hiking brand's foray into rapid excursions.
The outdoor footwear brand Keen is set to expand its repertoire with the introduction of its first trail running shoe, the Keen Seek. Scheduled for release on July 25, the Keen Seek is designed for faster adventures, promising a perfect blend of comfort, durability, and protection.
Keen, a 22-year-old brand known for its hiking boots, shoes, and sandals, including the popular Targhee IV and Newport H2, has taken two years to develop the Keen Seek. The company conducted in-depth interviews with runners to learn about their preferences for trail running shoes, resulting in a purpose-built design for faster adventures.
One of the lead developers at Keen ran 900 miles in 2024, testing various prototypes of the Keen Seek. A team of testers from across the US was also enlisted to fine-tune the geometry and design of the Keen Seek through multiple prototypes.
The Keen Seek comes with several innovative features. It boasts a wide forefoot design, providing extra room for natural toe splay, improving comfort and stability on uneven terrain. This feature reflects Keen's iconic fit known for accommodating wider feet.
The shoe's durability and traction are another standout feature. Outsoles feature 4mm high-abrasion rubber lugs rated to last up to 925 miles before wearing smooth, offering exceptional grip and longevity on rough trails.
High-energy cushioning is powered by Keen's QuantumFoamX, their newest energetic foam, designed to deliver fluid runs with longer-lasting, responsive comfort, reducing fatigue over long distances.
Sustainability is at the forefront of the Keen Seek's design. The shoe incorporates harvested materials such as webbing made from post-consumer plastic bottles and outsoles made with agricultural waste, emphasizing environmental responsibility. The shoe is also PFAS-free, avoiding harmful chemicals since 2018.
Comfort and protection are ensured by features such as padded tongues and collars, breathable textile linings, a speed-lace webbing system for a snug fit, and thermoplastic urethane heel counters for added stability and support.
The Keen Seek is versatile, offering off-trail performance suitable for runners from beginners to advanced. It balances cushioning, traction, and foot support, making it a reliable companion for various trail conditions.
The men's model has 38.5mm of foam under the heel, while the women's version has 36mm. The shoe weighs relatively light, with the men's version at 10.9oz and the women's version at 8.75oz.
The Keen Seek is priced at a reasonable $185, in line with Keen's announcement that it would not raise prices to cover tariffs. It will be released in the UK in September.
Will Schuh, director of product management at Keen, stated that the brand wanted to create a shoe for faster adventures using its proven fit, comfort, durability, and protection. The Keen Seek trail running shoe innovates by combining a wide toe box, long-lasting aggressive traction, advanced cushioning foam, and sustainability features, all designed to accommodate runners across varied trail conditions while supporting comfort and environmental considerations.
