New model MG4 hatchback by SAIC MG officially begins pre-sales with a starting price of $10,270
The British automotive brand, MG Motor, has announced its latest offering in the electric vehicle (EV) market with the launch of the all-new MG4. The compact electric hatchback is now available for pre-order in China, starting at RMB 73,800 ($10,270), and will be simultaneously introduced to overseas markets.
Built on SAIC's E3 pure electric architecture, the MG4 offers two lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries of 42.8 kWh and 53.9 kWh, providing ranges of 437 km and 530 km respectively based on the Chinese CLTC cycle. A new semi-solid-state battery option, named Anxin, is also available, offering around 53.9 kWh capacity and delivering about 334 miles (CLTC-rated) range, and better cold-weather performance.
The MG4 features a single permanent magnet synchronous motor producing 120 kW (163 PS) and 250 Nm torque, enabling a top speed of 160 km/h (99 mph). Fast charging from 30% to 80% takes about 20 minutes.
In terms of dimensions, the MG4 measures approximately 4,395 mm (length) × 1,842 mm (width) × 1,551 mm (height) with a 2,750 mm wheelbase. The European version lists a slightly shorter length of around 4,287 mm, making it larger than some rivals like BYD Dolphin, suggesting more interior and cargo space.
The MG4 offers improved space efficiency and rigidity, thanks to its cell-to-body (CTB) battery integration. The battery is IP67 and IP69K rated for ingress protection, and MG offers a lifetime warranty on the powertrain.
The MG4 comes equipped with MG Pilot driver assistance systems such as active emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, traffic jam assist, intelligent speed limit assist, and optional blind spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert on higher trims.
Priced attractively, the MG4 starts from around €31,845 in Europe, making it one of the cheapest EVs in its class. The new MG4 is currently available in four variants during pre-sales, with starting prices of RMB 73,800, RMB 81,800, RMB 90,800, and RMB 105,800.
The MG4 is expected to compete with established rivals like the Volkswagen ID.3 and BYD Dolphin in the largest EV market globally. It also faces competition from Nio Firefly EV and other budget electric hatchbacks like the Vauxhall Corsa Electric and emerging EV models.
In other news, SAIC's MG Motor has announced plans to produce cars locally in Egypt. MG Motor, a subsidiary of SAIC Motor, has started pre-sales of the redesigned MG4 compact hatchback in China. The highest-priced variant of the new MG4 features a 53.9-kWh LFP battery pack, with a CLTC range of 530 kilometers. The three lower-priced variants are equipped with a 42.8-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, offering a CLTC range of 437 kilometers. The new MG4 offers a variant with semi-solid-state batteries, with pricing to be announced in September and mass production set to begin later this year.
