Netflix expands its list of approved cameras, welcoming the Blackmagic URSA Cine 12K LF camera model.

The Blackmagic Design URSA Cine 12K LF has been added to Netflix's esteemed list of approved cameras. This digital film camera, equipped with advanced technology, has met the high standards required for image quality, workflow compatibility, and reliability in professional productions.

The criteria for a camera to be added to Netflix's approved list are not fully detailed publicly, but some key requirements can be inferred from the URSA Cine 12K LF. For instance, the camera offers an exceptional 12K resolution, meeting Netflix's demanding standards for image quality and detail crucial for cinematic productions.

In addition to high-quality image capture, cameras approved by Netflix are typically digital cinema cameras favoured by industry professionals for narrative and high-production-value content. The URSA Cine 12K LF aligns with this standard, delivering exceptional image quality and professional-grade performance.

Moreover, the camera must support Netflix’s required production and post-production workflows. The URSA Cine line integrates well with DaVinci Resolve workflows, which is widely used in Netflix productions. This compatibility ensures seamless transition from capture to post-production.

Netflix also requires that at least 90% of a program's final runtime be captured on approved cameras to meet their standards. The URSA Cine 12K LF, with its high-speed networking for on-set media sync, is well-equipped to handle such requirements.

Camera manufacturers must also submit their cameras for Netflix’s thorough assessment, which includes testing for image quality, color science, dynamic range, sensor performance, recording formats, data integrity, and compatibility with broadcast standards. The URSA Cine 12K LF has passed this rigorous evaluation, demonstrating its ability to meet Netflix’s high standards.

The URSA Cine 12K LF is also the first digital film camera with fast, high-capacity storage built in, allowing for efficient and reliable data management on set. It also features a new large format RGBW 36 x 24-millimeter image sensor for increased dynamic range.

The camera also includes WiFi with SRT streaming for remote client viewing, making it an ideal tool for modern, remote-friendly production environments. Furthermore, it allows users to swap between PL, LPL, EF, and Hasselblad lens mounts, providing flexibility in lens choices.

Industry standard Lemo and Fischer connections are integrated into the URSA Cine for high-end cinema production, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of professional equipment. The list already includes the Blackmagic Design URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2 and Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 12K OLPF, further demonstrating Blackmagic Design's commitment to delivering professional-grade cinema cameras.
