NCCoE Launches Public Comment Period for Genomic Data Cybersecurity Framework
The National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) has launched a public comment period for its latest report, 'Cybersecurity Framework Profile for Genomic Data'. The report, NIST Internal Report (NIST IR) 8467, offers voluntary guidance for managing cybersecurity risks in systems that process genomic data. The comment period is open until 11:59 PM ET on Monday, July 17, 2023.
Released on February 25, 2021, the report identifies 12 genomic-related Mission Objectives and prioritizes relevant CSF Subcategories for protecting genomic data throughout its lifecycle. Organizations can use this guidance to assess their current cybersecurity practices, develop individualized profiles, and prioritize cybersecurity investments.
The NCCoE encourages experts in genomic data and/or cybersecurity to join its Genomics Cybersecurity Community of Interest for project news and announcements. Comments on the report should be emailed to [email protected] using the provided comment template before the deadline.
The report is intended to supplement existing cybersecurity standards and should be used alongside privacy risk management considerations. NIST plans to create a complementary Privacy Framework Profile for Genomic Data in the future, further enhancing the protection of sensitive genomic data.
