NATO's Dynamic Messenger 2025: Unmanned Systems Take Centre Stage
NATO has concluded Exercise Dynamic Messenger 2025 in Portugal, focusing on integrating unmanned systems into naval operations. The two-week drill involved around 3,800 personnel and 260 systems from 22 nations, with observers from 13 more countries.
The exercise saw Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1) and Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 2 (SNMCMG2) play central roles in rehearsing defence strategies against unmanned aerial and surface threats. Notably, the Netherlands led the opposing force for the first time, while Ukraine's Navy directed operations, bringing valuable frontline experience to NATO training.
The mine warfare phase featured French explosive ordnance teams testing new systems like the A9-M Autonomous Underwater Vehicle and the Pivot Remotely Operated Vehicle. NATO's Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation introduced advanced data capabilities, including a 'Data Mesh' system and the Mainsail system for early warnings of potential sabotage near critical undersea infrastructure.
The exercise covered a wide range of operational demonstrations, including naval mine warfare, persistent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, protection of undersea infrastructure, countering unmanned vehicles, and multi-domain command and control. It helped refine tactics, doctrines, and unit self-defence against emerging threats. The exercise combined Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping with Maritime Unmanned Systems (REPMUS) with Dynamic Messenger (DYMS) for testing new technologies and refining operational concepts.
Exercise Dynamic Messenger 2025 has concluded, leaving NATO with refined strategies and tactics for integrating unmanned systems into naval operations. The exercise brought together 22 nations and showcased advanced technologies, with a focus on collaboration between industry, academia, and NATO nations. The successful completion of the drill demonstrates NATO's commitment to staying ahead of emerging threats in the maritime domain.
