mLab & DS4JI II Launch STEP UP II: Empowering 100 Youth in Digital Skills for SME Placement

mLab has teamed up with the DS4JI II project to launch the STEP UP II programme, aiming to equip 100 young people in Gauteng, Northern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Limpopo with digital skills and place them with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The programme focuses on cloud computing, digital marketing, and responsible AI use, with a strong emphasis on supporting young women and persons with disabilities.

The STEP UP II programme, facilitated through the DS4JI II project, seeks to guide youth into cloud computing jobs and freelance opportunities in the gig economy. Participants will gain cloud computing certifications and learn digital marketing skills, along with the responsible use of AI for work efficiency. The programme is open to NEET youth, from those with a matric pass to TVET college higher qualifications.

mLab views the STEP UP II programme as a bridge connecting young people to real economic opportunities. It aims to equip youth with targeted skills that meet the needs of businesses, enabling a successful transition from learning to earning. The programme prioritises gender representation, with a focus on including female youth and persons living with disabilities. The specific timeframe for training and placement is yet to be announced.

The STEP UP II programme, a collaboration between mLab and the DS4JI II project, is set to empower 100 young people in four South African provinces with digital skills and connect them with SMEs. By focusing on cloud computing, digital marketing, and responsible AI use, the programme aims to create a pathway to employment and freelance opportunities in the gig economy, while promoting gender inclusivity and supporting young women and persons with disabilities.
