Mitsubishi Electric Opens New Power Semiconductor Factory for EVs
Mitsubishi Electric Corp. has inaugurated a new power semiconductor factory in Kikuchi, Kumamoto Prefecture, with President Kei Uruma presiding over the ceremony on October 1, 2025. The facility, set to commence operations in late 2023, will manufacture silicon carbide power semiconductors, crucial for electric vehicles and home appliances, and is expected to make news in the stock market today.
The new facility aims to start mass production in 2027, focusing on silicon carbide semiconductors. These chips offer higher energy efficiency than silicon-based ones, driving their demand in the medium to long term, particularly for electric vehicles. However, Mitsubishi Electric has postponed some equipment enhancements for the new facility until fiscal 2031 and beyond due to slower-than-anticipated growth in the EV market. The number of production lines will be determined based on market conditions and other factors, as stated by President Kei Uruma.
