Meta Unveils Plans for AI-Focused Smartwatch with Camera Capabilities

Meta Platforms Inc. is reviving its smartwatch project, with a new AI-first approach that could revolutionize the way we use smartwatches in the future. The company is set to enter the smartwatch arena, according to recent reports, and has identified Huaqin Technology as its production partner.

The upcoming smartwatch will feature a dual-camera system, with a 5MP front-facing camera for video calls and a 12MP rear camera mounted underneath the device for scanning the environment and off-wrist photography. This design emphasizes real-time interaction with the physical world rather than typical fitness tracking or notifications.

The smartwatch will complement Meta’s other AI wearables, including Ray-Ban smart glasses and Quest VR headsets, integrating closely with Meta’s broader strategy to enhance metaverse experiences. The AI features are expected to include gesture control and context-aware computing, positioning the device as a computing companion for spatial awareness and environmental interaction, aligned with augmented reality (AR) and AI-powered metaverse technologies.

Meta published new research on smartwatch technology last week, focusing on recognizing small movements in the fingers for device control. Developments over the coming weeks and months will be closely monitored as the brand moves forward with this innovative project.

Initially prototypes of the smartwatch are in the works right now, and there are reports of similar collaborations with Oakley and Prada in the works for a wider array of styles for potential users. A small run of the smartwatch is touted to test the waters and see what the market response looks like.

The smartwatch could potentially be used for video conferencing, making it an attractive option for both personal and professional use. However, battery life and price will be crucial to the success of the smartwatch device.

Meta is best known for the Meta Quest series of VR Headsets and the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses, and this new smartwatch is said to have a camera mounted on the underside of the device. The revised plan for Meta's smartwatch includes photography capabilities, positioning it as an innovative wearable focused on AI and metaverse integration rather than conventional smartwatch features.

Stay tuned for more updates as Meta is expected to possibly reveal this smartwatch at its annual developer conference, Meta Connect, scheduled for September 17–18, 2025, though the exact launch confirmation remains uncertain.

  1. Meta's new AI-focused smartwatch, set to feature a dual-camera system, will not only complement its existing AI wearables like Ray-Ban smart glasses and Quest VR headsets, but it will also differentiate itself from conventional smartwatches by prioritizing real-time interaction with the physical world, AI features like gesture control, and potential photography capabilities.
  2. Along with the upcoming smartwatch,Meta might also collaborate with other brands like Oakley and Prada to offer a wider range of styles, as it strives to position this innovative AI wearable as a potential choice for both personal and professional video conferencing, while also addressing battery life and price concerns to ensure its success in the market.
