Master Safe Landings: Boldmethod's New Course Tackles Ballooning

Pilots can now enhance their landing skills with Boldmethod's new online course, 'Mastering Takeoffs and Landings'. The course, priced less than a typical flight lesson, offers practical tips like those found in their weekly email newsletter. Meanwhile, understanding and recovering from 'ballooning' is crucial for safe landings.

Ballooning happens when a pilot increases pitch too sharply during landing, causing the aircraft to stop descending and climb towards a stall. The severity depends on airspeed and pitch increase rate. To recover from a slight balloon, gently relax back pressure while maintaining a nose-high pitch, descend into a second flare, and touch down, possibly using a slight amount of power to cushion the landing.

In case of an excessive balloon, perform a go-around immediately to avoid stalling. During a crosswind landing, maintain directional control with opposite rudder and lower the upwind wing further to compensate for drift at slower speeds. The key to avoiding or controlling ballooning involves maintaining proper approach speed, smoothly controlling the descent with gentle flare input, and adjusting pitch to manage lift without abrupt control movements. Applying power to recover from a balloon also creates torque, requiring additional right rudder pressure to keep the airplane aligned with the centerline for touchdown.

Boldmethod's 'Mastering Takeoffs and Landings' course provides valuable techniques for safer landings. Understanding and practicing balloon recovery methods is essential for pilots to maintain control and avoid hard touch-downs or stalls during landing.
