Major Cairo Metro Line 1 Overhaul Starts in October 2024

A major overhaul of Cairo's Metro Line 1 is set to begin in October 2024. The €800m (£674m) project, led by a consortium of Colas Rail, Orascom Construction, and Hitachi Rail, will upgrade the line's power supply, tracks, and signalling systems. The aim is to boost safety, reliability, and capacity, ensuring smoother and greener journeys for passengers in Egypt's bustling capital.

Colas Rail will tackle the electric power supply, catenary, and electromechanical systems, while also improving the rail track. The work will be carried out during daytime hours, with commercial operations maintained throughout the 64-month project duration.

Hitachi Rail, meanwhile, will modernize the signalling, control, and telecommunications infrastructures. Osama El Tash, a seasoned professional, has been appointed as the project leader for this significant renovation.

The contract has been divided among the consortium members, with Colas Rail and Orascom Construction each receiving 35%, and Hitachi Rail taking 29%. The project is expected to significantly enhance the passenger experience on Line 1, making journeys safer, more reliable, and more sustainable.
