Machines are narrowing the gap! During the All-Star Game, Major League Baseball (MLB) will employ an Automated Ball-Strike challenge system.

The 2025 Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star Game in Atlanta is set to showcase a groundbreaking development in the sport's history, as the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) Challenge System makes its debut in a major league event.

First tested in the independent Atlantic League in 2019, the ABS system has undergone progressive testing in minor leagues since then, with hybrid and full automated strike zones at the Triple-A level by 2023-2024. This year, the system is being tested in major league spring training, and its official introduction at the All-Star Game marks a significant step towards full implementation in regular-season major league games.

The ABS system allows the pitcher, catcher, or batter to call for a challenge immediately after a pitch, with each team having two challenges per game and retaining successful ones. Crucially, no outside help from the dugout is allowed in calling these challenges.

Fan reception to the ABS system has been largely positive, with 72% of fans polled during spring training regarding it as a "positive experience" and 69% favoring its inclusion in the game moving forward.

The All-Star Game's deployment of ABS could pave the way for its adoption across all MLB games, enhancing accuracy and consistency in ball-strike calls. The system promises real-time pitch calling and challenges without human umpire variability, and increased fan engagement through transparent and immediate reviews.

This move represents a historic shift for MLB, blending technology with traditional gameplay to modernize the sport. During the game, players will indicate a review by tapping their cap or helmet. The Hawk-Eye system will be used to track the trajectory and location of pitches during the review process.

The 2025 All-Star Game, taking place on July 15 in Atlanta, commemorates Hank Aaron's historic home run number 715 in 1974. The event will feature the use of projection mapping and custom pyrotechnics to re-create Hank Aaron's historic home run moment at the end of the sixth inning.

Meanwhile, the MLB competition committee is considering implementing the challenge system for the 2026 regular season if the All-Star experiment is successful. The MLB vice president of on-field strategy, Joe Martinez, stated that the system works well and is liked by players, coaches, umpires, and fans.

Despite the Dodgers' recent skid raising questions ahead of the trade deadline, the All-Star team includes notable figures such as Clayton Kershaw, Dodgers left-hander, who was selected as a 'Legend Pick' for the NL All-Star team. Trinity Rodman, a notable figure in a separate article, expressed a desire for Wimbledon announcers to stop discussing her father in an unrelated context.

As the MLB All-Star week begins on Saturday with the Futures Game, the draft on Sunday, the Home Run Derby on Monday, and the All-Star Game on Tuesday, baseball fans are eagerly anticipating this innovative step in the sport's evolution.

  1. The Dodgers, based in Los Angeles, California, will be represented in the 2025 MLB All-Star Game by Clayton Kershaw, a left-hander from the team.
  2. The debut of the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) Challenge System in the All-Star Game will be a significant step towards its potential implementation in regular-season games for all MLB teams, including the Dodgers.
