For more than two decades, a special division of the Dubai Police has cruised the streets in luxury supercars, breaking speed and cost records left and right. Instead of nabbing speedsters or crimes, these officers serve as paying homage to their city and popular photo opts for tourists across the United Arab Emirates. The fleet is increasingly going electric, pleasing police and tourists alike, as long as the power under the hood is worth the rev.
Supercar Patrols at Top Spots
On a cool desert evening, Ali Yousif, dressed in his signature ceremonial uniform, rolls up to “The Frame” with fellow officers from the police headquarters. This powerful picture frame, opened in 2018, is one of Dubai's most impressive sights. Ali's here to show off the latest set of whips—well, sorta.
With 20 years on the Dubai Police force, Ali has made it into the most desirable special unit—you know, besides the UAE-SWAT squad. gang busting and smuggling ring obliterators. But Ali's duties are far from routine. Today, he's cruising the city's northern sector, shiny and green in his new electric Lotus Emira.
Dubai Police's Supercar Unit: A 20-Year Tradition
This high-speed electric marvel is part of the Dubai Police's Supercar Fleet, a tradition that started in 2001. Today, they boast 18 vehicles, including eye-popping rides like Ferrari Gran Lusso, Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Panamera, Rolls-Royce Cullinan, Bentley Continental, BMW 8 Series Coupe, or Mercedes AMG GT.
While Ali gently glides The Frame in his Lotus, his colleagues are patrolling hotspots with luxury rides like the Rolls-Royce Cullinan Mansory, Bentley Continental GT, Audi R8, or a Tesla Cybertruck on two shifts.
Car Manufacturers Supply Swanky Rides
Auto giants from around the world clamor to supply the Dubai Police with their top-end, high-speed patrol vehicles, which the force loves to flaunt at events and tourist sights. Ali explains, "We're the face of our country in the eyes of tourists, hosting and welcoming them as they frolic through our exotic landscape."
Squabbling among officers over who gets to drive which ride? Forgetaboutit! The pricey, one-million-Dirham (240,000 Euros) vehicles are doled out based on duty rosters, much like less-hyped police vehicles, such as BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, or Nissan Patrol. The patrol officers mainly cruise the city in internal combustion engines, although there are a few Tesla models in the mix—like the Cybertruck, which has been causing a stir on patrol for a spell now.
Lamborghini's Arsenal for Dubai Police
Lamborghini has been arming Dubai Police with eye-popping patrol vehicles for years, like the 666-horsepower Urus Performante, which can reach speeds of 306 km/h [1]. In a statement, General Ahmed Mohammed bin Thani, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, proclaimed: "The powerful super SUV will assist Dubai Police in better serving the residents, maintaining social security, and providing services in popular tourist destinations."
These polished white and green rides come equipped with blue LED lights and extras such as an onboard weapons safe, first aid kit, or defibrillator for all contingencies. In a pinch, an officer could speed their way to one of Dubai's numerous hospitals.
Police officers are regularly trained on different vehicles, as their role in the force changes frequently. Ali Yousif is currently thrilled to be serving in the Supercar Unit, alongside his colleagues.
