Luenen Leads with Safe, Sustainable School Commuting in European Mobility Week
Luenen is making waves in promoting safe and sustainable school commuting. The city is participating in the European Mobility Week (EMW) from September 16 to 22, 2025, with a focus on creating enjoyable and climate-friendly routes for students.
Mayor Jürgen Kleine-Frauns hopes Luenen's initiative sets a precedent. The city is launching the 'Early practice' action at all primary schools, encouraging children to walk, cycle, or use public transport. To make the journey more enjoyable, the 'Playway' action box is being used, transforming the school route into a creative adventure.
At the Elisabethschule, a 'temporary school street' traffic trial is being set up to raise awareness about car-free school zones. Luenen is one of three pilot municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia for the 'EMW makes school' project, aiming to strengthen school mobility management. The city's experiences and findings will be shared statewide with other members of Zukunftsnetz Mobilitaet NRW.
NRW Minister of Education Dorothee Feller and NRW Minister of Transport Oliver Krischer have jointly taken on the patronage of the European Mobility Week 2025 in the state. They emphasize the importance of safe and independent mobility for children and young people as both an educational and transport policy goal. Luenen's participation in EMW is a significant step towards achieving this goal.
