Modular Electric Watercraft Paves Way for Accessible High-Tech Watersports
In a bid to revolutionize water sports, Propel, a company established by former professional snowboarder Jason Toth, has launched the world's first modular electric watercraft. This innovative product enables users to switch between five distinct ride modes, democratizing the foiling experience.
The new 5-in-1 electric watercraft can be configured as an electric stand-up paddleboard (e-SUP), electric scooter, scooter with hydrofoil, standalone eFoil, or a seated watercraft called the "Jet Kart." By catering to a wide range of enthusiasts, from beginners to seasoned riders, Propel aims to broaden the audience for foiling activities.
In an interview, Toth revealed that the idea for the modular watercraft stemmed from a desire to simplify foiling and make it more accessible. He stated, "We wanted to remove the fear and complexity from foiling. This isn't just about a new board; it's about creating more ways for people to connect with water."
Riders can switch between modes quickly, without needing any tools. The system promises seamless configurations in just a few minutes. However, some may question Propel's claim of being the world's first 5-in-1 watercraft, as similar claims have been made before, such as by the Mo-Jet in 2022.
The electric watercraft boasts an enclosed jet drive system, a high-capacity lithium-ion battery providing up to three hours of ride time, and a lightweight inflatable hull that can be easily packed into two travel bags, weighing a total of 40kg.
While the watercraft seems promising, the real test will be whether it can perform optimally in all modes, or if compromises have been made to accommodate multiple configurations. The product was launched through a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, with early backers receiving discounted pricing on the full system.
Toth, who previously worked in high-end film production and now devotes his time to foiling, expressed ambitions to make foiling a mainstream activity rather than a niche pursuit. "We're not just building a toy for thrill-seekers," he said. "We're trying to redefine what personal watercraft can be."
