Automation Transforms the Machine-Building Sector: New Professions Emerge

The machine-building sector is witnessing a significant shift as automation takes center stage, leading to the creation of new and transformed professions.

According to Irjan Sharhan, the Vice Minister of Industry, the machine-building sector will introduce 8 new professions this year, including the 3D printing and welding engineer, an operator of robotic painting systems, and others. This development is a result of the commissioning of investment projects in the processing industry.

One of the new professions that will be in high demand is a specialist in virtual prototyping. This role will play a crucial part in the design and development of machines, leveraging digital technology to create virtual models before physical production.

The trend of automation is not limited to the machine-building sector alone. In the metallurgy and mining sector, new professions include a robotic mining equipment operator and a developer of smart systems. These roles are integral to the efficient operation of automated machinery and the development of intelligent systems that optimise resource utilisation.

The construction sector is also undergoing a transformation, with new professions such as a digital designer, a Big Data analyst, and a 'Smart Home' designer emerging. These roles will be instrumental in designing and managing the integration of technology in construction projects, ensuring efficiency, sustainability, and enhanced living experiences.

The Ministry of Industry and Construction's Atlas of New Professions now includes 75 new professions, reflecting a fundamental change in society's perception of working professions. This shift towards automation and digitalisation is gradual, replacing manual labor with automated labor, creating a demand for personnel in the sectors supervised by the ministry, which stands at around 40,000 people.

While specific details about the new and transformed professions included in the Atlas of New Professions under the Ministry of Industry and Construction in Indonesia were not found, it is evident that the energy sector, artificial intelligence, digitization, renewable energy, and downstream industries are likely to see similar transformations. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) notes that in the energy sector, 3,764 types of jobs are emerging, including in green energy, with 487 being entirely new jobs requiring new competencies.

As Indonesia continues to invest in sectors like artificial intelligence, digitization, renewable energy, and downstream industries, it is expected that new professions related to these areas will continue to emerge, shaping the future of work in Indonesia. For precise information about the new and transformed professions included in the Atlas of New Professions, consulting official Ministry of Industry and Construction publications or announcements would be necessary.

In the aftermath of automation revolutionizing the machine-building sector, the demand for a virtual prototyping specialist has arisen, who will utilize digital technology to design and develop machines through the creation of virtual models. Moreover, the emergence of new professions is not exclusive to the machine-building sector, as the construction sector is also experiencing a wave of new roles such as a digital designer, a Big Data analyst, and a 'Smart Home' designer, all of which will play a critical part in the integration of technology in construction projects.
