Jakarta EE Leads Enterprise Java Landscape in 2025 Survey

The Eclipse Foundation has published the 2025 Jakarta EE Developer Survey, revealing significant shifts in the Enterprise Java landscape. With over 1,700 participants, a 20% increase from last year, the survey provides valuable insights into cloud-native applications and modern Java development.

The release of Jakarta EE 11 and growing awareness of Spring's basis on Jakarta EE specifications have contributed to a notable shift in the community's priorities. For the first time, Jakarta EE leads with 58% usage over Spring (56%).

The survey highlights a significant increase in Java 21 usage, now at 43%, up from 30% in 2024, indicating a trend towards more recent Java versions. Conversely, usage of older versions like Java 8 and 17 is decreasing.

Developers are increasingly seeking cloud-native readiness and practical Kubernetes features like health checks, secrets management, and telemetry support. However, cloud migration strategies remain varied, with lift-and-shift leading at 22%, but uncertainty is growing, with 20% of respondents having no clear cloud strategy.

Early adoption of Jakarta EE 11 is prominent, with 18% of respondents already using it, particularly in smaller companies with fewer than 500 employees. Large enterprises with more than 10,000 employees also show significant interest.

The 2025 Jakarta EE Developer Survey underscores a significant shift in the Enterprise Java world, with Jakarta EE leading in usage and Java 21 gaining traction. The community's focus on cloud-native readiness and practical Kubernetes features indicates a clear direction for future development. As uncertainty grows around cloud migration strategies, the survey provides valuable insights for enterprises navigating this evolving landscape.
