German EU Parliamentarian, Hannah Neumann, Targeted by Iranian Cyber Attacks

German EU parliamentarian, Hannah Neumann, has revealed that her office computer was targeted by malware in an Iranian cyber attack. Thankfully, no data was exfiltrated, and no significant damage was done according to Neumann's statements. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution alerted her to the attempted attack in March, and subsequent investigations by the parliamentary administration confirmed this.

As a vocal critic of oppression in Iran and a well-connected member of the Iranian resistance movement, Neumann suspects the attack was "very targeted" against her. Previous attempts to gain access to her office computers under false identities had been underway for weeks, accompanied by disinformation campaigns and intimidation attempts in online networks.

Neumann has received support from her faction and other party members, with many aware that they too could be potential targets for spying attacks. She hopes the incident will prompt improvements in IT systems and increased vigilance across the board. In a stronger diplomatic stance, Neumann emphasized that such activities against any EU member are unacceptable.

The office of the EU parliament's President Metsola has strongly condemned these actions against Neumann.

It is worth noting that Germany's federal parliament has experienced significant cyber attacks in the past. Notable incidents impacted its information system, leading to data theft, including email accounts of several MPs and former Chancellor Angela Merkel. These attacks have been linked to the GRU, a Russian military intelligence agency known for conducting cyber operations against EU member states. However, the current attack on Hannah Neumann remains unconnected to any specific hacker group as of now.
