Introducing a New Messenger to Russia: Russian Citizens to Be Familiarized with "Molniya"
The Russian tech companies Red Soft and Passion Tech have announced the development of a new messaging platform, the "Lightning" messenger. This multi-functional platform aims to replace existing foreign services, offering services such as social networking, video sharing, streaming, payment processing, and international trade.
The open beta test for the "Lightning" messenger will be available on Red OS M, VK Store, and RuStore platforms starting from September 4, 2025. However, the service is not yet available for general use, as it is still in the open beta test phase.
Alexander Kasyanov, head of the international "Comfortable City" digital project, expresses mixed views about the prospects of the "Lightning" messenger. He notes the potential advantage of the Russia-China focus of the "Lightning" messenger under sanctions, and the integration with Chinese payment systems as another potential advantage for simplifying trade with China.
However, Kasyanov also warns that even technically superior products can fail without the right user experience. He encourages waiting for the release of the "Lightning" messenger to evaluate its success.
Regarding competition with Telegram and WhatsApp, these platforms remain dominant with large user bases, extensive features, and strong market presence. It remains challenging for new entrants without significant differentiation or expert endorsement to gain substantial market share.
The status of expert opinion on the "Lightning" messenger remains uncertain. Developers of the "Lightning" messenger aim to reach 15 million users within 1.5 years.
The news about the "Lightning" messenger is still being reported by RIA Novosti. Kasyanov considers the "Lightning" project to be technologically advanced and ambitious, but finds the developers' promises optimistic for the given timeframe. He emphasizes that the key to the "Lightning" messenger's success will be the creation of a convenient ecosystem for mass users.
As the open beta test approaches, the tech community eagerly awaits the release of the "Lightning" messenger and its potential impact on the messaging market.
