Innovative 'Concrete Coral' Art Project Transforms Miami Beach Coastline
An innovative environmental art project is set to transform the coast of Maui Beach. 'Concrete Coral', an installation of 22 submerged cars, aims to raise awareness and promote the restoration of South Florida's reef system.
The project, part of The Reefline, a 7-mile underwater sculpture park, will be unveiled at the end of October. Visitors can snorkel alongside the 'cars' from November onwards. Each concrete car, weighing about 13 tons, is seeded with corals, providing homes for marine life and boosting biodiversity.
The installation is a response to the severe degradation of Florida's Reef Tract, the largest reef system in the continental U.S. Warming temperatures, rising sea levels, disease, and human activity have taken a toll. An unprecedented marine heatwave in 2023 caused widespread bleaching, further damaging the reefs. Organizers hope that The Reefline will draw locals and tourists, encouraging other cities to adopt ecotourism. The project seeks to change public behavior towards nature and the environment.
The 'Concrete Coral' installation, set to be unveiled in late October, is more than just an art piece. It's a call to action for environmental restoration, using ecotourism to engage and educate. By transforming Myrtle Beach's underwater landscape, it aims to inspire change and protect Florida's vital reef system.
