IEA Predicts Solar Surge: 3.6 TW Installations by 2030

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has released its latest report, predicting a significant surge in global solar installations. Around 3.6 TW of solar is expected to be installed between 2025 and 2030, with record additions of nearly 600 GW forecast for 2025. However, the report also notes reductions in solar forecasts for China and the US, while other markets like India and the EU show increased projections.

The IEA expects a slowdown in annual solar installations between 2026 and 2028 due to policy timelines in China and the US. Despite this, solar is set to become the largest global energy source by 2030, overtaking hydropower. The report predicts over 600 GW of solar to be added in 2029, with installations nearing 700 GW in 2030. Notably, solar will account for almost 80% of the 4.6 TW of renewable energy added globally by 2030.

The IEA's latest report also lowers renewable energy growth forecasts by 5% for 2025-2030, with solar accounting for more than 70% of the reduction. This revision reflects significant reductions in solar forecasts for China and the US, with the US seeing a 140 GW decrease by 2030. However, the IEA expects faster-growing solar capacity in several regions, including India, the United States, and Southeast Asian countries.

In summary, the IEA's report predicts a substantial increase in global solar installations over the next decade, with solar set to become the dominant renewable energy source by 2030. Despite reductions in forecasts for China and the US, other markets show increased projections, and solar is expected to account for a significant portion of the global renewable energy mix.
