Hyundai Ioniq 2 undergoing road tests: Could it be India's upcoming compact electric vehicle?
Hyundai Ioniq 2: A Compact and Affordable Electric Vehicle for Urban Drivers
Hyundai is set to introduce a new electric vehicle (EV) to the market, the Ioniq 2. This compact, five-door hatchback is positioned as an urban-friendly vehicle, rivaling models like the Volkswagen ID.2.
The Ioniq 2 boasts a design similar in proportions to the Hyundai i20, with modern styling cues such as a clamshell bonnet, sleek LED headlamps reminiscent of the Ioniq 6 facelift, and a coupe-style sloping rear tailgate. It will be built on a front-wheel-drive, lower-cost version of Hyundai’s E-GMP electric platform.
Key specifications include power output up to around 150 bhp and an estimated driving range of approximately 300 to 400 km on a full charge, supported by battery options likely between 38 kWh and 50 kWh. The EV uses a 400V electrical architecture aimed at cost-efficiency, and it targets mass-market appeal through a simple drivetrain and moderate battery capacity.
However, the Ioniq 2 is expected to fall slightly short of the EV3's range for urban commutes due to sticking to a smaller battery. The Ioniq 2's battery size is not specified in all reports, but it is expected to optimize costs by using a popular front-wheel-drive drivetrain with a smaller battery.
The Ioniq 2's user interface (UI) is similar to that of a smartphone, offering a user-friendly experience. The vehicle is also expected to debut Hyundai's new SDV (Software Defined Vehicle) ecosystem, Pleos Connect.
Despite Hyundai India not yet announcing any plans to launch the Ioniq 2 in the Indian market, industry insiders anticipate a likely launch window in late 2026. If launched, the Ioniq 2 could potentially be a competitive contender in the EV market, offering an affordable premium EV option compared to existing models, with an ex-showroom price estimate in the range of ₹15–20 lakh.
The Ioniq 2 will be the most compact electric car in Hyundai's portfolio, slotted between the Inter and the Kona Electric. Its design language is similar to the rest of the Ioniq range, combining Hyundai’s futuristic Ioniq styling and tech with affordability, targeting urban buyers who want efficient, practical electric mobility without premium crossover bulk.
Hyundai is dedicated to expanding its EV lineup in the Indian market, having recently launched the Ioniq 5 and Creta Electric. If the Ioniq 2 does make its way to India, it could be well suited for the market due to its practical design and features.

The Ioniq 2's user-friendly interface and smartphone-like design suggest a lifestyle integration of technology, enhancing urban drivers' daily commuting experience. As it is positioned between the Inter and the Kona Electric, the Ioniq 2's compact size and affordable premium price make it an attractive option for tech-savvy car enthusiasts seeking efficiency in their urban mobility, all while being part of Hyundai's expanding electric vehicle lineup.
