After an illustrious 11-year tenure, Beth Johnson, the Vice Chair and Chief Experience Officer of Citizens Financial Group, is retiring on March 3. Johnson, who joined the Providence, Rhode Island-based lender in 2013, has been a key member of the bank's executive committee, playing a significant role in building the bank's digital, data, and marketing capabilities while focusing on customer needs.
During her time at Citizens Financial Group, Johnson oversaw customer experience and digital design, enterprise payments strategy, and the bank's sustainability & impact programs. She drove the company's environmental, social, and governance initiatives to support the communities the lender served.
Johnson's retirement marks the end of a distinguished career that spans over 30 years. Before joining Citizens Financial Group, she spent about 15 years as a partner at Bain & Co.
As Johnson prepares to embark on her next chapter, she plans to have a portfolio of activities, including board service, advising companies, charitable work, and other endeavors. The bank is not hiring a successor for the chief experience officer role, and Johnson will not be focusing on a successor for this position.
Meanwhile, the bank is creating a senior executive role, which will be part of the executive committee, overseeing an expanded corporate strategy function. The bank is considering both internal and external candidates for this role.
In the restructuring, marketing, enterprise data, analytics, enterprise payments, and some support functions will report to consumer banking. Brendan Coughlin, Vice Chair and Head of Consumer Banking, will oversee the data, analytics, and marketing teams. Don McCree, Senior Vice Chair and Head of Commercial Banking, will lead enterprise payments work.
The exact nature of Johnson's future activities outside of Citizens Financial Group was not specified. However, it is known that she is a member of the board at Invesco.
