Mercedes-AMG is making strides in the electric vehicle (EV) market, showcasing the AMG GT XX – a fully electric four-door sports saloon. The automaker is demonstrating flexibility in introducing an electric sports car, even if it may not be highly profitable, for the sake of the brand.

CEO of AMG, Schiebe, emphasized the company's adaptability, stating that they are "flexible, very flexible" regarding their portfolio. Schiebe suggested that building a car that is not highly profitable can be important for brand shaping.

Currently, AMG is focusing on the success of its GT two-seater with a combustion engine. However, the company is considering developing a fully electric two-seater sports car in the future. At present, AMG is more successful with investments in its two-seater combustion engine platform than in the electric area.

In the meantime, AMG is set to launch a highly dynamic four-door electric coupe in 2026 based on the AMG.EA platform. While they are considering a two-door electric GT model similar to the AMG GT, its market acceptance is uncertain, and no specific launch date has been set yet. If a new electric coupé gets the green light, it would continue to be sold alongside the combustion engine sports car.

AMG has already decided to offer a particularly potent SUV alongside the AMG GT XX four-door saloon. The electric car version of the GT 63 S E Performance, introduced in 2024, focuses on driving enjoyment, similar to the plug-in hybrid model.

Mercedes-AMG will continue to invest in combustion engine sports cars well into the next decade. The company is still trying to understand the market developments for battery-only sports cars to define the target image for the potential electric sports car.

Previously, Mercedes-AMG had introduced a two-seater electric sports car, the battery version of the AMG SLS, but it was only built in small numbers and did not have a successor. Schiebe stated that an electric sports car could be realized without expectations of high profits.

In conclusion, Mercedes-AMG is demonstrating a flexible approach to the future of electric sports cars, willing to invest in the technology despite potential lower profit margins, for the sake of the brand and the driving enjoyment of its customers.
