HDMI Association Unveils Version 2.2 of the HDMI Specification

SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA'S LATEST: The HDMI Forum reveals HDMI 2.2 Specification, boasting 96Gbps bandwidth and advanced HDMI Fixed Rate Link technology for exceptional audio-visual experiences across an array of devices.

The 2.2 Specification brings significant improvements, supporting higher resolutions and refresh rates, including 12K at 120Hz and 16K at 60Hz. Additionally, it supports high-quality video formats such as 8K at 60/4:4:4, 4K at 240/4:4:4 at 10-bit and 12-bit color depths.

"We're thrilled to launch the revised HDMI 2.2 Specification, enabling superior performance capabilities and features for enthralling and immersive new solutions," said Chandlee Harrell, HDMI Forum president, stressing the potential of the new technology for exciting products. A fitting nickname for the new offering, Ultra96, will help consumers recognize devices that support 64Gbps, 80Gbps, or 96Gbps bandwidth in compliance with the 2.2 Specification.

Manufacturers are encouraged to use the Ultra96 moniker to label products adhering to the maximum bandwidth limits. Products advertising the Ultra96 feature require the Ultra96 HDMI Cable to ensure seamless performance. The new Ultra96 HDMI Cable supports up to 96Gbps, serving all HDMI 2.2 applications. The current Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable is applicable for systems supporting up to 48Gbps maximum bandwidth.

The HDMI Forum stated that the Ultra96 HDMI Cable, similar to its Ultra High Speed counterpart, will be part of the HDMI Cable Certification Program. This ensures each model undergoes testing and certification, displaying a Certification Label.

In addition to the new Ultra96 HDMI Cable, the updated specification includes Latency Indication Protocol (LIP) for enhancing audio-video synchronization, particularly in multiple-hop configurations, such as those involving an audio-video receiver or a soundbar.
