HD Diversity Delay Application Developed in Collaboration Between Inovonics and GatesAir

Inovonics and GatesAir have joined forces to create a functional and cost-efficient solution that addresses a specific customer requirement. The collaboration, known as the HD Diversity Delay application, aims to improve FM broadcast synchronization and signal robustness by implementing precise delay management and diversity reception techniques.

Key Features

The new application integrates Inovonics' delay and diversity technology with GatesAir's FM transmitter systems. It allows broadcasters to apply precise time delays to audio signals in an HD Radio environment, facilitating multiple synchronized transmitters. The solution supports HD Radio's hybrid digital and analog signals, maximizing coverage and minimizing interference.

Enhancing signal robustness, the application uses diversity combining, which employs multiple delayed signals to reduce multipath distortion and improve audio quality.

Significant Benefits

The benefits of this collaboration are numerous. It promises improved signal reliability and listener experience, especially in challenging coverage areas. Seamless synchronization of multiple transmitters results in wider, more consistent coverage. The reduction of interference and audio distortion caused by signal reflections or timing mismatches further enhances the listening experience.

Moreover, the application is compatible with existing HD Radio infrastructure, enabling broadcasters to upgrade without extensive equipment overhaul.

Primary Applications

The application primarily targets FM broadcasters using HD Radio technology who operate multiple transmitter sites or boosters and require precise signal timing coordination. Networks looking to enhance coverage in urban areas with high multipath distortion or complex terrain will also find this solution beneficial. Broadcast facilities aiming to improve overall audio quality and listener satisfaction through advanced delay and diversity management are ideal candidates for this collaboration.

Availability and Further Information

Representatives from GatesAir and Inovonics will be available to discuss the collaboration at the IBC Show in Amsterdam at booths 8.B75 and 8.B77.

The Inovonics Model 55x series includes two rack-mounted solutions designed to monitor off-air FM and HD Radio signals. The FMXi 4g from GatesAir features an embedded software architecture that allows broadcasters to choose where to locate program importer/exporter functions. The application triggers HD Diversity Delay functions for certain FM/HD time alignment scenarios, enabling communication between Inovonics Model 55x modulation monitors and GatesAir's FMXi 4g HD Radio program importer/exporter.

This application represents a significant step forward in HD Radio transmission technology, combining Inovonics’ expertise in delay and diversity with GatesAir’s proven transmitter platforms. As reported by Radio World (2025)[1], the solution is the first and remains the only of its kind to embed HD Diversity Delay software. Examples of such locations include single-frequency networks (SFNs) and radio stations via satellite.
