Hackers sending extortion letters to the liability fund
The Liability Insurance Company, based in Roßdorf, has confirmed that no sensitive personal information was breached or accessed during a cyber attack that occurred on July 15th. In a statement, Torsten Wetzel, a member of the company's board of directors, thanked employees for their high level of commitment during the challenging period.
Despite the network disruption lasting over a week, causing speculation about the severity and operational impacts of the attack, the insurer has confirmed that key services have been restored securely. Erie Insurance, the company from which the Liability Insurance Company drew its latest update on data breaches, stated that there is no evidence that any sensitive personal information, financial records, or legally protected data were breached or accessed by the threat actor during the incident.
The company's service center can now be reached via phone, email, and an emergency page. Customers are advised to check their spam folders if they have not received the confirmation email activating their subscriptions.
The Liability Insurance Company is working closely with the State Criminal Office and has decided not to give in to criminal activities, as confirmed in consultation with the authorities. The exact nature and extent of the personal data breach are still under investigation, and those affected will be notified once more information is available.
The insurer has also confirmed that it will not meet the demands of the cybercriminals. The company is making progress in rebuilding its IT systems, but the full restoration of business operations is not yet foreseeable.
In the meantime, the Liability Insurance Company encourages customers to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities. The company will continue to keep its customers informed as more information becomes available.
