Gradually Implementing Artificial Intelligence in Real-World Applications

AI has been making waves in the realm of live events and film production, but what's the real deal? Professionals are capitalizing on various AI applications, maintaining a blend of machine-assisted creativity and human expertise.

The recent "AI in the Production Process" panel shed light on how industry pros are using different AI solutions, the strategies they've employed, and the cautions necessary when integrating AI for planning, execution, and post-production.

Rachael Harris, from Harris Production Services, took the helm, joined by Chris Crichlow, CFLEX founder; Greg Casparian, Creative Technology director at Total Concept Integration; and Janell Smith, IDTVFLIX CEO.

Janell shared insights from using AI in the pre-production phase for her sci-fi production, "Hive Mind." Tools like ScriptaAI for script breakdowns, Cinelytic for simulated shoot schedules and cost scenarios, and Midjourney for environmental design speed up the process while enhancing visual development and worldbuilding. However, she stressed that AI results shouldn't be treated as infallible. "It's not like the Bible," she said. "We're still in the early stages of using it as a tool."

Meanwhile, Greg Casparian emphasized the importance of being well-acquainted with AI tools and their limitations. Using a wrench as an example, he explained that every tool has its purpose and can be used for other things, but it's crucial to know the specific jobs for which each tool is best suited.

The conversation then veered towards AI-driven decision-making, with Chris Crichlow sharing a real-world example. During a creative industry summit in Munich, his team created an activation, and when the client asked for a radical room setup change mid-show, he used ChatGPT to quickly visualize the transformation. The client was dazzled by the AI-generated results but later needed to reverse course. Chris concluded that AI will become increasingly relevant for live events, but its adoption must be done cautiously, balancing machine capabilities with human intuition.

In summary, AI is opening up new creative possibilities, automating complex tasks, and facilitating real-time hyper-personalized content. But successful integration requires ethical considerations, careful management of biases and data protection, ensuring quality and authenticity, maintaining transparent communication, and being aware of technical reliability issues.

  1. Janell Smith's sci-fi production, "Hive Mind," employs AI in the pre-production phase through tools like ScriptaAI, Cinelytic, and Midjourney to expedite processes while improving visual development and world-building, although she warns that AI results should not be regarded as infallible.
  2. Chris Crichlow, during a creative industry summit, utilized ChatGPT to rapidly visualize a radical room setup change requested by a client during a live event. While the client was initially impressed by the AI-generated results, they later needed to revert to the original setup, demonstrating the need for cautious AI adoption in balancing machine capabilities with human intuition.
