Rapid Network Expansion Plans Unveiled by German Government
In a bid to significantly expedite the expansion of fiber optic and fast mobile networks across Germany, the federal cabinet has introduced a bill to the Bundestag in Berlin, allowing for discussion and potential adoption before the summer break. The proposals include a modification to the telecommunications law, designating network expansion as an "overriding public interest." This designation would prioritize network expansion projects during approval procedures, resulting in swifter development processes.
Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger commented, "After much dialogue and consideration, it's now time for action. Digitalization is the cornerstone of our nation."
The coalition between the Union and SPD aims to implement the digitalization project by expediting an effective acceleration law, thus defining the expansion of both mobile and fiber optic networks as being of paramount public importance. This law is expected to enhance Germany's digital infrastructure, addressing both fiber optic and mobile network requirements in a comprehensive manner.
The fiber optic expansion efforts face a potential challenge due to a recent court ruling, which could potentially hinder nationwide fiber deployment by requiring separate court actions for duct information and access. However, Germany is still significant distance away from achieving nationwide fiber coverage, with only an estimated 15 million FTTB/H connections expected to be available by the end of 2030.
Despite the challenge, Deutsche Telekom has made considerable progress in expanding fiber connections, offering high-speed plans to over 10.6 million households and businesses. The company also promotes infrastructure-sharing as common practice, with many VATM member companies expressing interest in accessing these resources.
As part of the plan, the German government aims to streamline the utilization of existing infrastructure, like ducts, that are essential for fiber deployment.
The rollout of fast mobile networks, particularly 5G, is also gaining momentum. O2 Telefónica has initiated a nationwide 5G streetlight deployment in partnership with 5G Synergiewerk, focusing on the 25 largest cities in Germany. These streetlights combine LED lighting with small 5G antennas and fiber connections, enabling faster and more reliable mobile services in demand-heavy urban areas with limited rooftop space.
The long-term goal of the project is to enhance mobile network coverage in busy city centers and tourist hubs like Oktoberfest and Hamburg Dom, as well as further expanding 5G coverage across Germany beyond the initial phase.
