Google's Phone app might be getting a long-awaited new functionality
In a surprising turn of events, Google's long-awaited Call Recording feature has made its debut on the Pixel 9a, with some users reporting its presence on their devices. This comes as a surprise given that the Pixel 10 series devices, which were expected to be the first to receive the feature, are yet to see it.
The Call Recording feature, when activated, records calls and stores the recordings on the user's device. Users can enable or disable the feature at any time, and the Pixel 9a's Call Recording setting includes toggleable options for Call Recording, Manage Recordings, and Automatic Call Recording.
The Automatic Call Recording option on the Pixel 9a allows the device to record calls with non-contacts or specific numbers specified by the user. This feature is a valuable addition for those who frequently need to refer to call conversations for various reasons.
Google's support page now states that the Call Recording feature works on Pixel 6 models and newer. However, some Pixel 8a and Pixel 10 users, even those on the public beta, have not seen the feature on their phones.
The Call Recording feature was first discovered on Pixel devices in the last weeks on the Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro, as announced by Google. The absence of the feature on these devices is causing some confusion among users.
It's important to note that the Call Recording feature has a history of legal concerns due to government and State laws. In an "All Party" state, both parties must consent to the recording, while in a one-party state, only one person needs to know the call is being recorded.
Google provides a way for users to manage their recorded calls by deleting them or having the device do it automatically. The updated Google support page provides detailed steps for "Always Record" and other Call Recording functions.
Recently, there were serious issues with Call Recording on Pixel devices five years ago. In response to these issues, Google may remove its audio disclaimer that the call is being recorded and replace it with a soft chime in Call Notes for a more discreet recording.
A user on the PixelUsersIndia subreddit posted a screenshot of the Call Recording setting on their Pixel 9a, which was shared by Android Authority. This further confirms the presence of the feature on the Pixel 9a.
As of now, the Call Recording feature is available only on Pixel 6 and newer phones running Android 9 or higher. It remains to be seen when the feature will be rolled out to the Pixel 8a and Pixel 10 series devices.
