Google Drive for Desktop Launches AI-Powered Ransomware Detection in Beta

Google Drive for desktop has just rolled out a new AI-powered ransomware detection feature in an open beta. This comes as a significant boost to cybersecurity, given that ransomware accounted for 21% of incidents observed by Mandiant last year, with average costs exceeding $5 million.

The new feature, included at no extra cost in most Google Workspace commercial plans, uses a specialized AI model trained on millions of real-world ransomware samples. It detects the core behaviors of ransomware attacks, such as mass encryption or corruption of files, and blocks cyberattacks automatically on both Windows and macOS.

When a ransomware attack is detected, the feature takes immediate action. It pauses file syncing to the cloud, preventing the spread of the malware. The user is then alerted, and the feature facilitates file restoration. IT administrators can review detailed audit logs of ransomware events in the Admin console and manage the feature's settings.

The continuous learning and adaptation of the detection engine, which incorporates new threat intelligence, ensures that the feature remains effective against evolving ransomware threats. This new AI-powered feature is a welcome addition to Google Drive for desktop, providing enhanced security and peace of mind for users.
