New Electric Vehicles from MG's IM Range Now Available in Australia

MG's latest additions to its electric vehicle lineup, the IM5 and IM6, have hit the Australian market. These mid-size liftback sedan and mid-size SUV models offer a blend of performance, technology, and style.

The IM5 and IM6 come in three variants: Premium, Platinum, and Performance. The pricing for these models starts at a drive-away price of $60,990 for the Premium IM5 and IM6, $69,990 for the Platinum, and $80,990 for the Performance models.

The IM5 Performance and IM6 can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.2 seconds and 3.4 seconds, respectively. The Platinum and Performance models boast a peak charging speed of 396kW, allowing for a charge from 30% to 80% in as little as 15.2 minutes. The Premium models, while having a lower peak charging speed of 153kW, still manage a charge from 30% to 80% in 20 minutes.

However, the IM range's reliance on touchscreens for most functions may cause distractions while driving. The interior, on the other hand, offers a premium feel with synthetic leather upholstery. The rear seat space is comfortable for two adults, although it may not match the spaciousness of equivalent Tesla models.

The IM range also includes features such as a four-wheel steering system, which makes its low speed turning circle equivalent to that of a small hatchback. The vehicles are also equipped with a self-parking system that can park, pull out of a spot, and perform parallel and perpendicular parking.

The IM5 has a boot capacity of 457 liters with the seats up (1290L with them folded), while the IM6 offers between 646 liters and 665 liters with the seats up (1621-1640L with them folded). The vehicles come with a seven-year/unlimited km warranty with seven years of roadside assistance if serviced with MG, or a five-year/unlimited km warranty if not.

The service intervals for the IM range are once-yearly/every 20,000km (whichever comes first), and the five-year cost of servicing is $2815 for the Premium and Platinum models and $3015 for the Performance models.

The entry-level Premium models feature a 75kWh LFP battery for up to 490km of range in the IM5 and 450km in the IM6. The Platinum and Performance models use a 100kW NMC battery.

The IM range's large 26.3-inch display includes wireless and wired smartphone mirroring, sat-nav, live services, apps such as Spotify, and FM/DAB+ radio. The IM5 Performance model has a top speed of 268km/h, while the IM6 Performance model can reach 239km/h.

The IM range is the latest electric offering from MG's IM Presented by MG sub-brand, expanding the brand's presence in the Australian market. This move is part of MG's strategy to re-establish itself in the market through several mainstream electric and conventional models.

In contrast, the IM brand in the UK is unified under the MG name to capitalize on MG’s brand recognition and broaden its appeal in the corporate and family market sectors. This approach integrates IM’s higher-tech image into the MG brand rather than maintaining a separate premium brand.
