Experience the novelty of automotive parking in a rotating structure akin to a Ferris wheel, complete with charging facilities for your electric vehicle.
The startup VePa is making waves in Europe with its innovative vertical parking and charging system, designed to address the challenges of cost-effective and efficient parking and charging of electric vehicles (EVs) in tight urban spaces.
Based in Germany, VePa specialises in planning, building, and operating modern parking systems, utilising its own paternoster technology. The Berlin VePa facility, for instance, has been upsized to accommodate a 17-foot, 7-inch-long vehicle weighing up to 6,170 pounds, making it capable of fitting a wide range of EVs.
Each VePa tower, measuring 525 square feet, can stack 16 cars, providing ample parking space in urban centres. The system operates through a garage system where users register, provide their license plate number, and payment method to enter. Upon entry, users exit their vehicles, plug them in for charging (if necessary), and the mechanism lifts and aligns the next available open platform.
VePa facilities are not just for parking; they are also used by the subscription car-sharing/rental business for convenient, secure parking. Each VePa tower is said to save more than 2,100 tons of CO2 per year, making it an environmentally friendly choice for urban parking.
The usage of VePa is approximately 60 percent parking and 40 percent charging. The charging cable provided with European cars is used for charging at these facilities. Staying hooked up after a car's charging is ostensibly allowed, but paying for the electricity while charging typically costs less than parking, so technically the rate does go up after the charging stops.
Apartment dwellers might park once a week overnight to charge up. The listed parking fee is €1 for 15 minutes ($4.69/hour) from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and an overnight charge kicks in at €10 ($11.72).
VePa has two parking/charging sites currently open in the Munich area, with one under construction in Berlin, and seven more in the planning phase. The typical user of VePa facilities is someone venturing into town for lunch or a meeting who needs parking and/or a charge.
It's important to note that VePa is not the only player in the automated parking tower business. Many rivals also offer EV charging, making the market competitive and innovative.
In summary, VePa is a game-changer in urban EV parking and charging, offering a cost-effective, efficient, and environmentally friendly solution in tight urban spaces. With its user-friendly garage system, VePa is making parking and charging in cities more accessible than ever before.
