Breaking Down Gaming Security with GLI
Expanding on GLI: Unveiling the Gaming Security Framework (GLI-GSF)
In the thrilling world of gaming, security is paramount. And that's where Gaming Laboratories International (GLI) steps in, offering a much-needed Safety Net!
Last year at the Regulators Roundtable, GLI shared their proposed gaming security framework that aimed to address the industry's call for top-notch security practices. This masterpiece was created in collaboration with Bulletproof, aiming to expedite the creation of a gaming-specific security framework.
Joe Bunevith, GLI's Vice-President of Government and Regulatory Affairs, explained, "We started this journey because many regulators approached us, asking if there were industry-specific cybersecurity measures. At the time, the answer was 'no'."
While other standards do exist (such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the National Security Commission (NSC), and the Center for Internet Security (CIS)), they are somewhat general, not tailored specifically for the gaming industry. So GLI took the initiative to create a gaming-centric framework.
GLI recently published the first two modules of their Common Controls for the upcoming Regulators Roundtable – an event scheduled for April 16-17 at Palms Las Vegas. These modules are as follows: GLI-GSF-1, Gaming Information Security (GIS) Controls Audit v 1.0, and GLI-GSF-2, Gaming Technical Security (GTS) Assessment v 1.0.
These modules aim to set the standard for security across the vast, complex gaming sector. The aim is to further develop individual modules beyond the Common Controls, targeting areas such as vendors for physical retail locations, iGaming, Sportsbook, cloud computing cashless systems, artificial intelligence, lottery, and more.
The development process is intense, with GLI's subject matter experts working tirelessly in conjunction with Bulletproof Solutions. The strategy involves seeking extensive feedback from regulators, suppliers, and operators. After thorough internal evaluation, the feedback is circulated across GLI's network, and finally, it enters a public comment phase.
The threats to gaming operations necessitate the reliance on an Independent Security Firm (ISF). GLI's framework sets forth the gaming information security (GIS) common controls necessary for auditing a gaming organization's system. The framework encompasses:
- Security Measures: Ensuring the protection of critical gaming activities and transactions.
- Risk Management: Identifying and mitigating potential security threats.
- Continuous Operation: Fostering reliable and efficient operations.
- Monitoring and Control: Establishing mechanisms to track and control gaming activities.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring gaming organizations conform to the regional norms and rules.
The first modules in GLI's Gaming Security Framework (GLI-GSF) are available on their website. They apply to all forms of gaming, replacing the technical security tests previously issued for land-based operations. Soon, they will replace the technical security controls established in interactive gaming and event wagering as additional modules are released.
The entire GLI Gaming Security Framework (GLI-GSF) and all GLI standards can be downloaded for free at www.gaminglabs.com. With GLI-GSF, the games remain fair, the products compliant, and the operators within the jurisdiction become accountable, ensuring everyone remains on the same page in the gaming industry.
