Exceptional Feat of Craftsmanship in Design

The first railway line between Heilbronn and Friedrichshafen, a significant part of the development of the railway system in Baden-Württemberg, holds historical significance and is set to celebrate its 175th anniversary on 28 and 29 June. This line, while not extensively documented, is understood to have been part of the broader railway expansion in southwest Germany during the 19th century.

One of the most notable engineering highlights along this route is the Geislinger Steige, a steep railway incline that posed a significant challenge during construction due to the unfavourable topography. The Geislinger Steige, located on the route between Stuttgart and Ulm, is historically important as it was one of the first major engineering challenges overcome during the construction of the pioneering railway lines in the Kingdom of Württemberg in the mid-19th century.

Constructed in the 1840s, the Geislinger Steige demonstrated engineering solutions to steep railway climbs, using powerful locomotives and specialized track design. After examining various alternative routes, the short and steep ramp in Geislingen was chosen for the construction of the first railway line. A unique locomotive, the rack-and-pinion steam locomotive 97 501, previously conquered the Alb ascent between Honau and Lichtenstein in the district of Reutlingen, is often associated with the Geislinger Steige.

Visitors can travel with old steam locomotives as part of the anniversary celebrations. A special offer is the use of a Trans-Europ-Express (TEE) from the DB Museum in Koblenz. Tickets for local transport, such as the Germany Ticket, are valid for this journey. Steam locomotives from the 1920s will climb the Geislinger Steige between Geislingen and Amstetten.
