Europe's Aerospace Giants in Talks to Merge Space Businesses

Three major European aerospace companies - Leonardo, Airbus Defence and Space, and Thales Alenia Space - are in talks to merge their space businesses. The proposed combined company would focus on satellites, not launches, and is modeled after MBDA, the European missile manufacturer. The merger discussions come as the United States leads in launch capabilities and private investment in space.

The proposed merger aims to create a European champion in space, with the new company modeled on MBDA. Airbus and Thales have been making progress in turning around their space businesses, but the United States remains far ahead in launch capabilities and private investment. The leadership of the three companies aims to make a definitive decision about the merger by the end of 2025, aligning with broader EU and industry strategic plans.

The talks were initially expected to conclude by the end of July, but a 'go/no-go' decision was missed. Roberto Cingolani, CEO of Leonardo, had anticipated a decision by then, but negotiations continue. Thales Alenia Space is redeploying 1,300 employees elsewhere in Thales with no layoffs, indicating a focus on restructuring rather than downsizing.

The proposed merger of these three European space businesses, if successful, could strengthen Europe's position in the global space industry. The new company, focusing on satellites and modeled on MBDA, could help Europe keep pace with the United States in space technology and investment. A definitive decision is expected by the end of 2025.
