Europe Explores Drone Wall to Counter Russian Incursions
German drone manufacturer Quantum Systems is exploring the feasibility of a European drone barrier to counter Russian drone incursions. The ambitious project faces bureaucratic challenges but has gained traction due to increased drone activities near NATO's eastern flank.
Several EU countries, including Romania, Denmark, Norway, and others along the eastern border, have reported unusual drone activities. This has led to enhanced defence measures and plans for an EU-wide drone defence system. Quantum Systems, which builds both reconnaissance and interceptor drones, is at the forefront of this initiative. Their Hunter drone is cheaper to deploy than manned aircraft for shooting down drones.
The drone barrier is a network of sensors and defence systems, designed to secure NATO's eastern flank. It's not just a technical system but a coordinated effort involving politics, industry, and the military. Quantum Systems' software links actors in the project, facilitating communication. However, the project faces hurdles such as coordination between the EU and NATO, determining responsibilities among member states and agencies, and ensuring the system is not overwhelmed by large numbers of cheap drones, as previously criticised.
The drone barrier project is a response to growing concerns about Russian drone incursions. While it faces bureaucratic challenges, it's a step towards enhancing Europe's defence capabilities. Quantum Systems' role in providing both hardware and software for the project is significant. Meanwhile, France investigates a Russia-linked tanker for 'serious offences', further highlighting tensions in the region.
