Epic Games' iOS Installations Surge as Apple, Google Face DMA Accusations

Epic Games has made significant strides in its battle against tech giants Apple and Google. Both companies are now accused of violating the Digital Markets Act, while Epic Games has streamlined its iOS installation process and seen a surge in installations.

Epic Games, the company behind the popular game Fortnite, has outlined a six-step process to install the Epic Games Store on an iPhone. This is a significant reduction from the previous 15 steps required by Apple. The company has also removed a dead end in the iOS settings that previously trapped users. These changes have led to a decrease in the user drop-off rate during installation, from 65% to 25%.

The installation rate on iOS is now approaching levels seen on Windows and Mac. By the end of 2024, Epic Games had reached 29 million installations of its store on iOS. This is a notable achievement, given that CEO Tim Sweeney initially aimed for 100 million installations. Despite missing this goal, Sweeney's persistence has paid off.

Meanwhile, Apple has removed 'scare screens' and other misleading messages under pressure from the EU. However, Google has criticized Epic Games' Android installation process, which still requires 12 steps. Epic Games is working to improve this process as well.

Epic Games' efforts to make its store more accessible on iOS have borne fruit, with installation rates rising and user drop-off rates falling. The company's persistence in the face of initial goals not being met has paid off. Meanwhile, Apple and Google face accusations of violating the Digital Markets Act, and Epic Games continues to work on improving its Android installation process.
