Emerging Technologies Shaping the Rhine Region: Sustained Development through Hydrogen Innovations

The Rhein-Kreis Neuss has published a hydrogen roadmap, positioning hydrogen as a central building block for the region's climate-neutral transformation. The aim is to drive sustainable growth and secure a climate-neutral power and heat generation, as well as support sustainable mobility, through the expansion of hydrogen technologies.

The roadmap outlines several key objectives:

1. **Promoting Sustainable Growth**: By establishing hydrogen technologies as innovation drivers, the region aims to foster sustainable growth. 2. **Expanding Climate-Neutral Energy Production**: The roadmap seeks to build upon the generation of clean energy to create a future-proof and eco-friendly energy supply. 3. **Fostering Sustainable Mobility**: The roadmap encourages the adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles, aiming to significantly reduce emissions in the transportation sector.

This strategic approach aligns with the broader goal of strengthening industry and the economy while achieving climate targets. Hydrogen is seen as a key technology that will significantly contribute to the local transformation and make the Rhein-Kreis Neuss future-ready.

A notable example of hydrogen implementation in the mobility sector can be seen in adjacent regions like Kerpen, where hydrogen buses are already in use, fostering sustainable transportation development and serving as a model for future municipal and regional projects.

The hydrogen roadmap supports the region by:

- Promoting sustainable economic growth, - Making energy supply climate-neutral and secure, and - Transitioning the transportation sector to sustainable, hydrogen-based solutions.

In this way, a comprehensive contribution to the **climate-friendly transformation and strengthening of the regional economy** is made.

DMT ENERGY ENGINEERS, a subsidiary of the TÜV NORD GROUP, specializes in consulting and engineering services in the field of sustainability. They will be providing advice, development, and implementation of projects along the hydrogen value chain.

Dr. Dieter Ostermann, chairman of the Hydrogen Hub Rhein-Kreis Neuss/Rhineland, stated that the hydrogen roadmap is a crucial step towards a sustainable energy future beyond coal. The roadmap will also identify value creation aspects for suppliers in the fields of plant engineering and component development through the switch to hydrogen.

Central actors from industry, SMEs, and crafts from the region, as well as relevant stakeholders, will be actively involved in the project. District Administrator Hans-Jürgen Petrauschke emphasized that the hydrogen roadmap will benefit businesses and people while contributing to climate protection.

The Hydrogen Hub Rhein-Kreis Neuss/Rhineland was founded in 2020 at Gut Gnadental in Neuss. The hydrogen roadmap is scheduled to be presented in January 2025 and takes into account the opportunities and challenges of structural change. The roadmap's development is being carried out by consulting firms DMT ENERGY ENGINEERS and Implement Consulting Group, with the latter focusing on implementing sustainable solutions for customers along the entire hydrogen value chain.

  1. To bolster sustainable growth in the region, the hydrogen roadmap advances hydrogen technologies as innovation drivers.
  2. The hydrogen roadmap aims to expand climate-neutral energy production by building upon clean energy sources.
  3. The implementation of hydrogen-powered vehicles is encouraged by the roadmap to reduce emissions in the transportation sector.
  4. The hydrogen roadmap further aligns with the goal of achieving climate targets, strengthening industry, and creating a sustainable and environmentally-friendly regional economy, through the support of finances, technology, and other resources.
