Election results within the local area temporarily unavailable due to server congestion
In an unexpected turn of events, the municipal elections in Münster and 70 other municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia encountered technical issues due to high access loads on election night, affecting the live election results. The provider of the Vote-Manager software, used in these municipalities for presenting election results, is the German company votegroup GmbH.
The issues occurred between 6 PM and 9:30 PM, causing delays in accessing the live election results online. Initially, a possible cyber attack was suspected due to frequent access to the election results page from certain computers. However, investigations involving the criminal police have ruled out a cyber attack as the cause of the technical issues.
The municipal IT service provider, citeq, was overloaded during this period. As a response, citeq took countermeasures on election night, including doubling server capacities and making technical adjustments. The number of page accesses gradually decreased after 9 PM, and a noticeable improvement occurred from 9 PM onwards.
Despite the increased capacities prior to the event, tenfold compared to the last federal election, the systems were not sufficient to process the high data load. Media reports indicate similar problems in the presentation of election results in other municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Further investigations are needed to clarify the exact technical circumstances that caused the delays in accessing the live election results on election night. It is important to ensure the smooth and timely presentation of election results to maintain public trust and confidence in the electoral process.
