Elbe-Elster's Broadband Expansion Kicks Off in October 2025
The Elbe-Elster district is set to undergo a significant broadband expansion, with the second phase of fiber optic development commencing on October 1, 2025, in Sonnewalde. This project, funded by the EU, the federal government, and the state, aims to provide over 25,000 households with gigabit-capable connections by 2028.
The expansion will initially focus on Schönewalde and Sonnewalde, with other locations following in 2026. The total expansion area includes these towns, Doberlug-Kirchhain, parts of Herzberg (Elster), municipalities of the Kleine Elster and Elsterland administrative districts, and parts of Finsterwalde. Approximately 4,100 kilometers of fiber optic cable will be laid, enabling bandwidths of up to 1 GBit/s.
The project is divided into northern and southern areas. epcan GmbH is responsible for the northern expansion, with a construction sum of 39.5 million euros. For the southern area, epcan GmbH will receive an additional 20.9 million euros, with over 25,000 households set to benefit. Civil engineering work is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2027.
The Elbe-Elster district's broadband expansion project is well underway, with significant funding secured and clear targets set. Upon completion, this project will provide numerous households with high-speed, reliable internet connections, bridging the digital divide in the region.
