Drone Shutdowns at German Airports Spark Investigation into Suspicious Cargo Ship

German authorities are investigating a suspected link between drones and a mysterious cargo ship following multiple drone incidents at airports in Germany and Denmark. Munich Airport was shut down overnight on October 2-3, 2025, due to drone sightings, causing disruptions and impacting thousands of passengers.

On October 2, 2025, at 22:18 local time, German air traffic control (DFS) halted flight operations at Munich Airport (MUC) due to drone sightings. The airport remained closed until 02:59 local time the next day, affecting 17 flights and nearly 3,000 passengers. Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen described the drone activity as a coordinated hybrid attack, suggesting a professional actor was involved. Authorities are still investigating the source of the drones and exploring a potential connection to a suspicious cargo ship operating in the Baltic Sea region, believed to be part of Russia's so-called 'shadow fleet'.

This incident follows a series of similar drone sightings in the Nordic region on September 24-25, 2025. Unidentified drones were spotted at Aalborg (AAL), Esbjerg (EBJ), and Sønderborg (SGD) airports, as well as near Skrydstrup Airport (SKS) in Denmark. 15 incoming flights were redirected to alternative airports due to the closure.

The German intelligence service is now investigating suspected connections between the drones and the suspicious cargo ship. Munich Airport has since reopened, but authorities remain vigilant. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential disruptions and security threats posed by unauthorized drone activity in and around airports.
