Drone collides near Varanasi Railway Station; police speculate it might be owned by a content creator
In a bid to ensure safety and prevent misinformation, Uttar Pradesh has tightened its regulatory stance on drones. This move comes in the wake of a drone crash near platform 7 of Varanasi Cantonment Railway Station on August 5, 2025.
The incident, which occurred late Tuesday evening, prompted a swift security response from teams including the Railway Protection Force, Government Railway Police Force, and a bomb detection and dog squad. Fortunately, the device did not carry any suspicious payload.
Authorities suspect the drone may have belonged to a social media content creator, but its owner remains unidentified. Preliminary investigation suggests the drone may have been used for filming reels or short videos.
In response to this incident and multiple unauthorized drone sightings in various districts, Uttar Pradesh police have taken stringent enforcement actions. In recent weeks, 17 FIRs and 29 arrests have been made for flying drones without permission, with some districts banning drones entirely without written approval.
The Chief Minister of India, Yogi Adityanath, held a high-level videoconference this week to discuss the issue. He instructed district magistrates and senior police officials to clamp down on unauthorized drone operations. Yogi Adityanath warned against the misuse of technology and stated that unauthorized drone use will not be tolerated.
To further enhance security, Yogi Adityanath has directed police to increase ground patrols and involve village security committees. Security agencies have also increased vigilance at key locations, including railway stations, to prevent potential threats associated with unauthorized drones.
The misuse of drones to spread fear or disinformation could attract serious charges under the Gangsters Act and the National Security Act in India. Yogi Adityanath also warned against rumor mongers, stating that they would face severe measures such as charges under the National Security Act.
