Imagine struggling to keep up with everyday tasks, your reality slipping away just when you thought you had it all figured out. That's the experience Hendrik Schulke from Dresden aims to convey with his groundbreaking app, "Dementi." Inspired by his grandmother's battle with dementia, this memory game offers a heart-wrenching glimpse into the struggles faced by people living with this degenerative disease.

The core of the app revolves around a seemingly simple memory game featuring 16 images. But there's a trick - every three moves, the images swap places. This unexpected alteration mimics the disorientation and confusion experienced by individuals with dementia, helping users truly understand their daily challenges.

Hendrik, a media informatics master's student, conceived the idea during a semester abroad in Vietnam. Apple CEO Tim Cook showcased his innovative app during the WWDC developer conference, applauding its ability to foster empathy and break down barriers.

According to Hendrik, the app may aid family members in better comprehending the struggles their loved ones with dementia encounter daily. It also serves as an educational tool, providing valuable insights into the disease itself.

Following Instructions and Conversations: Dementia can hamper an individual's ability to follow complex instructions and engage in conversations, leading to frustration and confusion.[1][3]

Memory Loss: Dementia often results in the inability to remember new information, making it difficult to complete tasks requiring memory, such as remembering appointments or taking medication.[1][2]

Physical and Mobility Tasks: Decreased physical capabilities can make tasks requiring mobility or high physical skills challenging.[1]

Communication and Social Interactions: Dementia can lead to problems with communication, fostering social withdrawal and isolation.[3]

"Dementi" aims to put users in the shoes of those living with dementia, offering a tangible representation of the difficulties they face in everyday life. Just one go of the memory puzzle leaves users questioning their abilities, echoing the emotional experiences of those battling dementia.

With empathy and understanding at its heart, "Dementi" is a powerful testament to Hendrik's passion and an invaluable tool for those seeking to comprehend the challenges faced by individuals living with dementia.
