"Discussing AI's influence on art: Crafting the VES Student Award-winning 2025 animation, Pittura"

In the realm of digital arts, a French student team named Lindenstraße has made a significant mark with their short film, Pittura. The film, which delves into the intricate relationship between humans and AI through art, is set in an alternative Renaissance period and has been recognised at this year's Visual Effects Society Awards.

The team, comprising Emma Boulot, Titouan Lassere, Adam Lauriol, Alexandre Lievin, Hellois Marre, and Rémi Vivenza, discussed the development, pre-production, and artistic influences of Pittura in an interview. Their work on the film is being covered in the How We Made series.

Pittura, with its unique and experimental techniques, showcases scenes that oscillate between the epic and the intimate. The team expressed feelings of excitement and pride upon winning the award for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Student Project, sponsored by Autodesk.

The Visual Effects Society Awards, held on 11 February, celebrate the best VFX in film, TV, games, commercials, and beyond. Last year's VES Award winner was also produced by the same school, ArtFX School of Digital Arts in France.

The production of Pittura required a unique pipeline or new way of working, as the team balanced storytelling with technical execution. Various VFX techniques and software were employed in the film's creation, with the most complex shot remaining undisclosed.

Lessons were learned from the Pittura project, providing valuable insights for future endeavours. The team members are grateful for the recognition and look forward to continuing their journey in digital arts.
