Digitized Historical Records from the National Archives Now Available Online

A wealth of historical documents, including passenger and crew lists, naturalization records, and territorial court records, have been digitized and made available online through partnerships between the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and Ancestry.com, Fold3.com, and FamilySearch.org.

Accessing the Digitized Records

These digitized records can be accessed on the respective platforms, with FamilySearch.org offering free access after registration. Ancestry.com and Fold3.com, on the other hand, require subscriptions, but free access is available in all Research Rooms at National Archives locations and related regional archives or Presidential libraries.

Examples of Digitized Records

Examples of the digitized records include complete passenger and crew lists arriving in Guam from 1948 to 1952 on Ancestry.com, and Alaska declarations of intention from territorial courts, which are partially available on FamilySearch.org.

Accessing Original Records without Microfilm Duplicates

Original records that have been digitized without microfilm duplicates are identified distinctly in NARA’s digitized holdings lists.

National Archives Catalog Access

All digitized materials produced through these partnerships are also accessible through the National Archives Catalog online. The list of digitized holdings is continuously updated as new materials are digitized and added.

Several digitization partners, including Ancestry.com, Fold3.com, and Familysearch.org, have digitized microfilm publications and original records from NARA's holdings.
