Design Discourse: Notable Indian Architect Neeraj Manchanda Delves Into the Importance of Design

Neeraj Manchanda, a renowned architect, is the Managing Partner at BaRGaD Design LLP, an award-winning architectural design practice based in New Delhi. The institution, formerly known as NMA, has made significant strides in the field of architecture, collaborating with leading organizations and institutions in India to create innovative environments.

Manchanda's professional journey began in 1985, when he earned his degree from the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi. Before setting up NMA in 1990, he was the lead architect at the 'Shelter Group' of the 'Society for Development Alternatives'.

Manchanda's work spans across multiple sectors, including education, hospitality, healthcare, and residential developments. His projects are spread across more than fourteen Indian states and have international commissions in Nepal and Vietnam. One of his most notable projects was India's first office building constructed using raw-earth blocks and sustainable technologies.

Manchanda's designs are not just aesthetically pleasing, but also functional and user-friendly. He believes in the design for connection and interaction, refining the size and location of a window to enable interaction with the world. The window can be transformed into a jaali, a large pane of glass, or an exquisite monsoon window that lets in air and light while keeping out the water.

In the context of design, a larger hole in a wall can be designed to bring in natural light (design for sustenance), while a small hole in a wall can be designed to provide fresh air (design for survival).

Manchanda is a pioneer in social development, with projects in health and education. His work has found positive acceptance by users and inhabitants, and he has imparted his knowledge at esteemed institutions such as the TVB School of Habitat Studies and the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi.

In 2023, BaRGaD Design LLP transitioned into its new avatar. The institution continues to collaborate with leading organizations and institutions in India, striving to create innovative environments that cater to the needs of modern society. Manchanda's work focuses on progressive, sustainable planning and design for various sectors, ensuring a future that is both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally responsible.

Recognition for Manchanda's work has come from institutions such as the Indian Institute of Architects, French Institute of Architects, Institute of Indian Interior Designers, and Indian Education Congress, among others. His contributions to the field of architecture are significant and continue to inspire future generations of architects.
