Delivery service DoorDash initiates continuous drone delivery operations within the Dallas-Fort Worth region.
In a significant stride for large-scale drone delivery services, DoorDash and Flytrex have partnered to launch a drone delivery service in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. This service, following a successful pilot, now serves over 30,000 households and more than 100,000 residents.
Customers can now order food from many local and national restaurants via the DoorDash app, with delivery by Flytrex’s autonomous drone fleet. The drones currently carry up to 6.6 pounds, the largest payload in the region, with upcoming models set to increase capacity to 8.8 pounds. The service offers the region's most extensive drone operating hours from 8:00am to 9:30pm, making drone delivery more convenient and scalable for daily local commerce.
The service is available to customers in parts of Little Elm and Frisco, Texas, and the expansion accommodates delivery to more suburban communities. Neighborhoods have established drop-off points at public and communal locations throughout the coverage area.
DoorDash's commitment to efficiency is evident in their plans to match each order with the most efficient delivery method, combining the Dasher network with innovative autonomous options like drones. This approach allows for serving more customers efficiently, as stated by Harrison Shih, head of product at DoorDash Labs.
In addition to its partnership with Flytrex, DoorDash has expanded its collaboration with Alphabet’s Wing to test drone deliveries in the U.S., starting with a pilot in Christiansburg, Virginia. Wendy’s was the first restaurant partner in this program, allowing select customers to order meals delivered by Wing drones within 30 minutes. This pilot follows the 2022 launch of DoorDash and Wing's drone delivery in Australia and marks the first U.S. drone delivery integration for DoorDash.
While no specific details about Coco Robotics' partnership with DoorDash or Flytrex have been disclosed, the firm is globally known for autonomous solutions in urban drone delivery logistics and could be part of emerging efforts to scale delivery services.
Amazon also plans to expand drone delivery to Arizona, with a hybrid site near Phoenix later this year. Consumer trust in drone delivery systems is due to their focus on safety in design and operation, as demonstrated by Flytrex's implementation of advanced drone traffic control technology to safely manage flight paths via automated systems.
In summary, DoorDash’s collaborations with Flytrex and Wing reflect the cutting edge in drone delivery, emphasizing expanded geographic reach, increased payload, integrated order platforms, and pilot programs bringing drone delivery closer to broad commercial use. The role of Coco Robotics remains less clear from current public information.
